My Thoughts:  I remember the days back when I was a kid when I'd put on scented nail polish and I thought I was Little Miss Hot Stuff.  Well, let's just say this has a touch of nostalgia for my youth while being a totally sophisticated grown up way to paint my nails.

I love the formula of the three colors above that I've tried above.  They are the only shades I've purchased, but I definitely would try more.  They go on richly pigmented and very creamy, and they don't streak.  I'd recommend two coats though to get a perfectly even nail. 

My favorite is the yellow, Sunlit Grass.  It's the perfect shade of yellow for my fair skin that doesn't look too acidic or jaundiced.  It's a beautiful warm yellow that instantly makes me think spring.  And despite the name, it doesn't have any green tones to it at all.

The pink, African Tea Rose, is not as pigmented in one coat as the other two, but it's still a gorgeous shade.  It was the first color I was drawn to and the first that I purchased.  There's a hint of blue to the shade without getting too far into the purple range, so I think it would compliment both cool toned skins as well as warm toned skins.  It's the perfect pink for summer time.

The red, China Flowers, is a beautiful warm red without getting too much into the coral range.  It's a true red without the cherry undertones of darker or brighter reds.

The nail polish scents are light, not overpowering at all, and it's really unique how the smell comes out as the polish dries.  I wish it lasted longer than a day, but of course it's not really plausible.  The finish of the polish is a smooth creamy finish with no shimmer on any of these three colors.  Although, in the stores I've seen shades with some beautiful shimmers.  There's a huge range of colors, too!

Even the packaging is awesome on these.  I love the little glass bottles with the round black tops.  Something about them is just feminine to me and appeals to my inner girl.  I like displaying them in my bathroom rather than hiding them under the counter in a shoebox.  They stand out from the endless sea of uninteresting bottles of nail polish.  Almost like a perfume bottle rather than nail polish.  Or maybe I'm just seeing things?  Am I the only one who gets that vibe from these?  I mean the "Parfumerie" isn't just an allusion to the smell, right?


Final Verdict:  LOVE!  These are the first three, and I can't wait to get some more when Ulta does some kind of Buy One, Get One sort of sale on Revlon products.

My Thoughts:  First off, I love the wand on this mascara.  It defines and separates my lashes so perfectly.  It's a little pokey, so make sure you don't accidentally jab yourself in the eye with this the first time like I did.  It's nice and long without being too thick and bulky, so it fits in nicely in the inner and outer corners of my eyes to get the lashes perfectly.  It also has a little half ball shape on the tip to comb through the tiny lashes at the inner and outer corners of the eyes.  Overall, it's perfect for the inner and outer corners!

My lashes are very straight, and 90% of mascaras weigh them down and make them lose their curl no matter what I do.  I'm a professional makeup artist, and I've tried every trick in the book to get them to keep their curl.  Nothing works with some mascaras.  I think it's just their weight that makes the lashes lose the curl.  A nice thing mascara that dries quickly and a little on the stiff side locks in the curl before it can fall.  This mascara is perfect for that.  The formula is thin and dries quickly, but it can be layered really well to build up the volume.  Combined with the nice brush, it combs them out and gives them very fluffy flirty volume rather than thick clumpy volume.  With one coat, I get definition and locked in curl with a nice rich black color.  Looks very natural but amplified.  Two coats is when I get the perfect volume, which I love because I can get multiple looks with the same mascara.


Final Verdict:  In addition to the Covergirl Bombshell Volume Mascara, this is my new second favorite drugstore mascara.  It's one of those "on a whim" purchases I'm so thankful for!

My Thoughts:   I think this has to be the absolute worst foundation I have ever tried.  You know how middle of the road I try to be about things I'm not a fan of.  Really.  I try.  If I'm not a fan I'll usually be all "this didn't work for me, because of xyz, but it might work for abc.... blah blah blah."  I can't see this being a good foundation for anyone really.  Unless you already have perfect skin that doesn't even need foundation.

How do I dislike this foundation?  Oh, let me count the ways.

1.  It smells.  Very chemical, and it's pungent.  Like an old plastic bottle that's been left in the sun.
2.  It has no coverage.  It spits out in a weird foam that fizzles a bit on your skin or palette or whatever, and when you try to blend it onto the skin it streaks and then fades away, clinging only to your imperfections.
3.  It clings to your imperfections.  Got pores?  Now everyone knows it.  Got dry patches, flakiness, or uneven texture?  Highlighted!
4.  It's hard to gauge the color to match your skin.  There's no universal color system, so even though I know what shade I am in the Revlon Colorstay, it means jack when trying to pick the right shade in this formula.  And the label on the bottle?  Not much help. I like to see the actual product to compare.  This was ashy and pale on me, and way too pink.


Final Verdict:  I was super annoyed when I tried this.  No application methods yielded positive results, and I was so happy when Ulta said they'd return it for me.  I exchanged it out for the Revlon Colorstay Whipped Foundation instead and was so much happier.  Major dud!

My Thoughts:  Let's examine the claims on this:  1.  Buildable to full coverage for flawless skin-  Yeah, it's pretty buildable, but you have to be carefully with how you apply this.  I found that if I tried to use a brush to buff it onto the skin, it wiped away previous layers instead of building.  You need to use a stippling motion with a multileveled brush or even better a makeup sponge like the Qosmedix sponge or Beauty Blender.  Patting and pressing built even layers, but only so much.  I still needed a bit of concealer in areas, and more than two layers of foundation started to cake up and look heavy. 
2. Soft,   matte finish all day long-  Yes, this was a matte finish by most definitions.  Not a super porcelain dry matte, but a believable natural looking matte finish that looked like it was lightly powdered.  3.  Withstands heat and humidity, great for summer-  I can't really comment on this one since I've got dry skin and wore it during the winter.  However, by comparison to the Revlon Colorstay Foundation in the traditional liquid formula, this one didn't last as long.  It was good for my dry skin in the winter time, and the texture is really unique.  But I found that it did fade sooner than the liquid, which is what I wear often in the summer time.

There are a few cons to this foundation formula.  It doesn't last quite as long as the traditional formula, and the bottle is a heavy glass jar- not very portable or travel friendly.  The glass jar makes it a little difficult to see the color of the actual product, and the sticker on the lid isn't quite a match.  I had to get two jars, since the lighter shade looked very light and almost greyish in the jar, but it ended up being a perfect match.  I'll test out the darker color maybe this summer to see how it does hold up to the heat and humidity.  Perhaps my skin was so thirsty that it just ate the foundation like dry skins tend to do sometimes.  Also, I'd recommend a primer to fill in pores before using this foundation.  It can build up a bit in those areas with the patting motion.  Sort of fills them in with extra foundation and can cause skin colored dots of pigment under the lighter layers on top.

There are a lot of pros though.  The whipped texture of the foundation is very unique, and I enjoyed blending this into my skin.  It felt very hydrating and soothing on my skin.  The finish is very nice as well, and I didn't need a powder over the top.  It set quickly on it's own, but I still had enough time to work with it and build it up.  If I could ever remember to do a favorites post or video again, this would have been in my favorites for the month of February.  I think I wore it every day I wore makeup to work.  It didn't ever feel heavy, even when it did start to build up in areas that I over did it looking for coverage, like around my nose.


Final Verdict:  Great foundation, but not the best for people who really need a full coverage as it's tricky to build.

My Thoughts:   I've seen ads for this mascara all over the place since spring, and when I was shopping my huge Ulta haul back in March I picked this up to see if it would live up to its claims.  I've used the other Grow Luscious mascaras in the past and felt they were decent for a drugstore brand.  This one was different in that the want looked more like the style I prefer, and it isn't claiming to really make the lashes grow- just strengthens them for less breakage.

The wand shape is really what sold me on this mascara as a whole.  I'm not a fan of the traditional tapered spoolie style wands.  I just don't feel that they grip the sides of the lashes for maximum coverage.  This has three sets of longer bristles alternating three sets of shorter bristles to grab the longer and the shorter lashes and coat them evenly.  To me, this gives the lashes a more even covering of the mascara itself over every single lash.

The formula itself is also a deeply pigmented black with thick enough molecules that even with one coat you are getting a generous amount of volume.  But when you layer it, it doesn't clump.  Again, I feel like it goes back to the shape of the wand and the alternating bristle lengths that helps achieve this even coverage.

I had a non-waterproof version of the Revlon Lash Potion Mascara, and it lasted nicely throughout the day without flaking or smudging, even in high humidity in August in Virginia.  By the end of the day, it didn't fade or start to clump up, and it was very easy to remove without tugging on my lashes.  *Note: I use coconut oil to remove my mascara, not a makeup remover sheet like a lot of people or a liquid soaked cotton round.  After several days of use in a row, I didn't notice any less breakage or dryness to my lashes, so I can only assume that it's strengthening in comparison to non-damaging.  Whether over time the mascara would impact how strong my lashes would become, I'll probably never know since I change my mascara like I change my underwear- every day it's something new!

Final Verdict: Great drugstore mascara for volume without clumping!

July Favorites

It's been forever since I've done a favorites post, March in fact!  I figured it was high time that I get into the routine of doing these every month, so here are my favorite hair and makeup products for the month of July.

L'Oreal Total Repair 5 Damage Erasing Balm :  This is the only product in this list that I haven't actually reviewed yet, but I'm getting ready to do one next month.  I'm almost completely done using this jar of conditioner, and I'm totally in love.  I think this treatment has pretty much replaced regular conditioner in my shower.  Already from experience, I learned that most traditional conditioners don't give me the kind of hydration and therapy that I need with my constant coloring.  I've been coloring my hair for half my life now, so there's nary a hair on my head that hasn't been almost processed to death.  I keep my hair healthy however by washing it only 2-3 times a week and using a treatment conditioner like this L'Oreal one instead of regular conditioners.  I think I've used just about every hair treatment mask out there at some point or another, and this one has impressed me the most.  And it's only $6.99!  I picked it up on a whim at Target one day, and I have barely used anything else since.  My hair is soft and bouncy, and the shine is great!  It's honestly the healthiest it's ever felt.

Revlon Colorstay Foundation:  {Read my review here}  Since I've got a bit of a tan this month from spending a lot of time outdoors (despite the ridiculous 90+ degree temps!), I've been using this foundation a lot.  I picked it up in a color I knew was a little too dark at the time, but now it's perfect.  But that's not the only reason I've been using it.  It really does last all day long, and it's proven to be pretty humidity resistant as well.  I just use a tissue to blot my face when I feel sweaty (I don't get oily much with my dry skin), and it doesn't rub off that way.  I do notice a bit of transfer on my cell phone screen, but I think that every brand of foundation does that to some extend.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Brow Mousse:  {Read my review here}  This has totally replaced my Elizabeth Arden brow powder that I've been using for the past six years.  Every once and a while I'll grab a pencil to fill in my brows, but pretty much this is my go-to product for getting perfect brows that last all day long.  I think my favorite part is that it comes with a dual ended brush to apply the product and brush out the brow hairs.  And this stuff is majorly pigmented.  Just a tiny bit will fill in the whole brow, and after an entire month of using it nearly every day I've made just the barest of dents in it.

NYX Lip Butter in Eclair:  {Read my review here}  I introduced my teenage nieces to this lip gloss, and they are all about now, too.  I recently stocked up again at Ulta when they had a sale (and broke my challenge, I know! Ugh!), and I added a few more colors to my collection. I need to just start buying them online instead of in the store, because the colors I want are always out of stock in my local store.  They seriously had 1-2 of only a few colors, and I had to be nice and let my niece get the only one in a color I've been wanting.  What a nice Auntie I am! ha ha!  Meringue is a pretty decent substitute for Eclair if you can't get your hands on it by the way.  Eclair still remains my favorite though, and I use it daily.  It is the perfect pale pink and positively LIVES in my purse. (Peter Piper picked a peck.... haha)  Moving on...

Be A Bombshell Blush:  {See my review on IPSY here}  If you've read my blog about Tarte's Amazonian Clay Blush {here}, you'll know how much I absolutely adore their product.  But I think I may have found a new brand of blush to obsess over for a while.  I got the Be A Bombshell blush in Sweet Cheeks, and I've used it almost every day.  I alternate it with my Frisky Tarte blush, and this color gives me a great flush without being too bright.  It's a subtle warm pink that goes great with my fair skintone, although it does look better on me now with a bit of a tan.  It's nice and pigmented and can be brushed on sheer with a brush like the Real Techniques Stippling Brush, or layered for more color with an angled blush brush.

Covergirl Flamed Out Mascara: I haven't published my review for this mascara yet, but I've definitely been recommending it via my Facebook and Instagram if you've been paying attention.  (If not, why not?  Check them out and follow me now to stay up to date with my top recommendations BEFORE they hit the blog!)  This has a unique hourglass shaped wand that deposits mascara perfectly, and the formula is rich and creamy without clumping. It delivers perfect volume and the perfect price point.  Every time this month I've done my makeup, this is the mascara that I've reached for, and it's not even waterproof!  It hasn't smudged or melted off, either.  Not sure if they make a waterproof version, but I'll definitely be hunting it down at the store before I head to Florida in a few weeks to double check.

Product Review- Revlon Colorstay Foundation

 

 

From the Brand: Long-wearing coverage with a lightweight formula that won’t cake, fade, or rub off. With Time Release Technology, this oil-free, moisture-balance formula is especially formulated for normal or dry skin to continuously provide hydration.  (Available in 12 shades, also available in a formula for oily/combination skin, but since my skin is dry I tried the formula appropriate for my face.)

My Thoughts: There is a reason when you look up industry standards for makeup artists, one of the foundations listed is the Revlon Colorstay line.  This stuff has been around for years, and it continues to perform.  It lists it as a 24 hour wear, but as with anything with that claim, I'm not one to test it.  I wash my face before bed, thankyouverymuch.  However, I can put it on in the morning and know that it's going to stay put all day until it is time to wash my face.  It's available in two formulas, for oily/combination skin or normal/dry skin.  For a drugstore brand, it doesn't react with the flash of a camera and give the face a washed out effect.  It's easily blended with other colors to create a perfect shade if you're in between colors (which I am).

 

Personally, I don't find it particularly hydrating on its own.  It is nice and lightweight, the formula itself is very creamy and blends easily.  I like using a blender sponge to apply it best, but I also had great coverage and finish with the Real Techniques expert face brush.  It doesn't look heavy or cakey, although it is not totally transfer  resistant.

 

I do have a few (small) complaints though.  First, it comes in a glass bottle.  I hate glass, as it's heavier than plastic and is breakable.  So it doesn't travel well.  Also, there's no pump, just an opening at the top of the bottle where foundation can leak into the cap.  It also requires you to dip something into the bottle to extract the foundation, which can cause contamination if you're not careful.  I highly recommend using a q tip dipped into the jar to remove the amount of foundation you need and either apply it to the back of your hand or to dot around your face.  Don't dip it back into the jar if you need more- use the other end or a clean q tip!  Also, don't put your finger over the opening and tip the bottle to get the foundation out.  You'll be depositing bacteria and germs from your finger tip into the foundation that way.

 

Final Verdict:  Another of my favs for a drugstore brand.

Massive Makeup Haul- Target, Ulta, Sephora, and MAC

This past weekend I went on a massive makeup shopping spree to Ulta, Sephora, MAC, and Target, and I got a ton of products to review for upcoming articles here on the blog.  I want to put together some awesome Top 10 lists on categories like foundations, mascaras, lip products and more, so I knew I needed to have a comprehensive knowledge of the many options out there available.

I'm not going to go into reviews of all of the products that I purchased, as this would be the never-ending blog post if I were to do that.  As it stands, I had to film four different haul videos to get everything up on my YouTube channel!  I'm uploading the first one as I type this, and of course it's super late in the evening because we lost internet for about 3 hours earlier right when I was getting ready to post today's blog.  I probably should have typed this up this morning before starting filming, but I was enjoying my day to sleep in while hubby-wonderful took the boys to school.  (He's seriously just the BEST.)

As you can see by recurring brand names, L'Oreal, Maybelline, Revlon, and Covergirl had buy one get one half off on a lot of their items, or else that'd be way more money I'd have spent.  Thankfully, I plan when I shop to take advantage of their awesome sales and use my accumulated points for dollars off my total!

Phew!  That was a lot to type up!  Now I'm off to bed before doing a wedding in the afternoon.  Hopefully I've learned my lesson and will type up tomorrow's blog when I get up instead of trying to hope the internet doesn't fail in the evening when I get back from DC.
