My Thoughts:  I had this highlighter for months before I ever actually used it, and I mistakingly tried to use it as a concealer at first under my eyes.  It wasn't such a big hit.  However, I've loved using it lately as intended, to highlight areas of my face.  I use it after my foundation and concealer, up along my cheekbones, the bow of my lip, down the center of my nose, forehead, and chin to bring some light.  It's got a slightly pinkish tone to it without being too "pink".  It doesn't have a shimmer, but it reflects light nicely.

I apply it straight from the wand to the areas I want and let it sit for about 30 seconds.  Then I pat it over the skin with either my fingertips or a damp beauty sponge.  I have pretty fair skin, but this is light enough without being too white.

The consistency is very creamy, and it doesn't dry and flake or crease at all.  If you use it as a concealer though, it won't last.  This works best when patted over the top of foundation or concealer, and lightly set with translucent powder.  I wouldn't recommend it for skin types too much darker than mine, as it will look ashy.


Final Verdict:  A great highlighting product without being shimmery that won't mess with the makeup underneath.

My Thoughts:  This stuff is really quite an interesting makeup.  The term liquid powder sounds weird, but it does dry to a nice powdery finish.  Not an overly dry looking super matte finish, but like it's been softly powdered very naturally.  I love it.  The color matched my difficult skin pretty easily, although I think I got lucky in that respect.  The bottle is a little difficult to gauge color, but it's not that off from how it dries.  It can oxidize just a tad, and I could see that being a problem on more oily skintones.  So make sure you purchase it from a retailer that will let you exchange for another color if it doesn't work out for you.

It does feel quite weightless, too.  I didn't even feel I had anything on.  It's definitely wet when you first apply, so there's that sensation, but it in no way feels cakey or thick once it's set.  If you've got the right color to go with your skin tone, it's pretty natural looking on the skin as well.  It was able to even my skin tone out without covering my freckles to the point where it was obvious I was wearing foundation. My skin is really hard to find a match for, since the freckles make my face appear much darker than my neck which is pale from no contact with the sun and devoid of freckles.  I have to put a lot of bronzer on my neck or wear shirts that minimize the appearance of a pasty neck. 

My only concern is with how long this foundation lasts.  I would give it a solid 5-6 hours before it does start to break down.  And that's with my dry skin.  Again, I'd be a little hesitant with oilier skin tones.  I think it applies best to the skin with a buffing style brush, like the one I use in the video from Real Techniques.  It was too thin to apply with my Qosmedix makeup sponge or Beauty Blender.  It seeped into the sponge too much.  Also, since the sponge was damp, it interfered with the formulation.  The foundation went on a bit splotchy and didn't set.


Final Verdict:  This is one of my foundations I keep in my collection for days when I just need to throw on something to look nice for a little while, such as for a meeting or one of my kids' school functions.  It's pretty inexpensive when compared with high end products, so I don't mind having it on hand for just a whenever kind of look.  It's a total holy grail product for me as far as drugstore products go.

My Thoughts:   I think this is a good idea in concept. For me, this execution falls a bit flat, and the error lays with the application wands for both the pre-mascara eyelash primer and the mascara itself.  The formula for both are pretty good, although I prefer the primer over the mascara.  The mascara wand heads are just a tad too generic to give me the kind of separation and volume I'm looking for in a mascara.  And they definitely don't do it any favors in the lengthening department.  When you're going to call your mascara Double Extend, it had better really extend and lengthen your eyelashes!

The primer doesn't contain any fibers to attach to the ends of the eyelashes and add physical length like you seen a lot of modern lengthening mascaras.  The brush should also really define them and elongate the look of the lash by depositing the majority of the mascara on the base and evenly coating the rest up the lash to a well defined tip.  The formula of the primer is good, and I do like to apply it with a clean mascara wand from the Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes Mascara for the perfectly prepped lashes if I'm not using another formula of mascara itself to prep.  I do like mascara primers like this one though, because they are made to be right up along the lashes and strengthen and hydrate them with their ingredients.  The key is to let the primer coat dry completely, comb it with a metal lash comb for definition, and then apply the mascara for the best effect.

Final Verdict:  Convenient if you don't want to have to tote two different tubes of product around with you, but if you're going to be applying two steps anyway, I'd invest in a primer with fibers or layer two mascaras that will give you the effect you crave.  On a scale of 1-10, this one hits only at about a 5.

My Thoughts:  This is definitely one of my Holy Grail mascaras for big effect at a little price!  I think in the world of drugstore makeup, there are few things that L'Oreal doesn't nail, and just about every single mascara I've ever tried by them has been amazing.  I've been using this mascara for about a year now, and from the very first time I put it on I was majorly impressed.  In fact, I'd been doing my makeup with a friend in the room, and when I turned towards her to say something after doing the mascara on only one eye, she stopped me mid-sentence with "WHAT mascara are you using?!  Your lashes look amazing!".  That's when you know you've found a winner!  Our other friend who arrived about an hour later even noticed and commented on how awesome my lashes look.

Let's talk tube.  It's so pretty!  I love the unique shape to it, and the waterproof version in the solid gold tube looks really classy.  It does show fingerprints, but really, no one is looking at my mascara tube that closely.

The mascara wand itself on the Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Mascara is nice and thin and long.  I don't mind a longer mascara wand when the bristles on it are nice and short.  It's when the become these giant monstrosities that can't be wielded without a poke in the cornea that I begin to get annoyed.  The bristles criss cross for coating the eyelashes on both sides and at the same time are able to comb and separate them.

The formula has tiny little fibers in it that coat the lashes and add both length and volume, along with a thicker style mascara to build up the volume and length some more.  It dries nicely- not too fast yet not so long that your lashes feel wet and you're afraid to blink.  It also stays fairly flexible, so no stiff feeling either even on the waterproof version. It gives my lashes a better hold on their curl, but like everything else I've tried it doesn't add curl to them I haven't put their with a lash curler first.  Although, it doesn't weigh them down and force the curl out either like other volumizing formulas that are thick and heavy.

Final Verdict:  If I'm out of mascara and my only options are the drugstore, you'd better believe this is the one I pick up!

My Thoughts:   For years this was my go-to eyeliner pencil because it was so densely pigmented and lasted a pretty long time.  Over time though, I came to find many new "favorites", and this was moved to the organizer bin of eyeliner pencils to only be fished out every once and a while when I was feeling nostalgic.  That's not to say that it isn't a great eyeliner for the price.  But in the many months that I've been writing this blog and experimenting with new brands and formulas of eyeliner pencils on myself, I haven't had the time to really use this one as much as I once did.

The pigmentation of this is an 8 out of 10.  It's not a pure inky black, but it's not sheer either by any stretch of the imagination.  It gives a nice even black line, and it's easy to keep sharp with it's roll up tip.  It glides nicely without tugging, but it's not a gel based formula.  It's slightly more waxy and dry in texture, which gives it a good grip but doesn't set to quickly to smudge out.  I really like the built in silicone smudger on the opposite end, which makes it easy to soften up the line for a smokey look.

I wouldn't give it a full 16 hour wear time however.  I'd say you'll get a solid 8 hours, and then based on how oily your lids are and how well you prime the lids first, you'll get up to another 6 hours out of it, making it a decent 14 hour max wear time.  It's not the best in the waterline, as it fades quickly and doesn't go on very pigmented there.  High humidity can also cause it to creep around the inner and outer corners of the eyes and require a bit of a touch up.  I almost always found myself wearing it in the winter or using a liquid liner pen to draw on my "wings" on the outer edges for a better lasting finish.

Final Verdict: Great eyeliner if you're looking for a drugstore version to keep costs down.

July Favorites

It's been forever since I've done a favorites post, March in fact!  I figured it was high time that I get into the routine of doing these every month, so here are my favorite hair and makeup products for the month of July.

L'Oreal Total Repair 5 Damage Erasing Balm :  This is the only product in this list that I haven't actually reviewed yet, but I'm getting ready to do one next month.  I'm almost completely done using this jar of conditioner, and I'm totally in love.  I think this treatment has pretty much replaced regular conditioner in my shower.  Already from experience, I learned that most traditional conditioners don't give me the kind of hydration and therapy that I need with my constant coloring.  I've been coloring my hair for half my life now, so there's nary a hair on my head that hasn't been almost processed to death.  I keep my hair healthy however by washing it only 2-3 times a week and using a treatment conditioner like this L'Oreal one instead of regular conditioners.  I think I've used just about every hair treatment mask out there at some point or another, and this one has impressed me the most.  And it's only $6.99!  I picked it up on a whim at Target one day, and I have barely used anything else since.  My hair is soft and bouncy, and the shine is great!  It's honestly the healthiest it's ever felt.

Revlon Colorstay Foundation:  {Read my review here}  Since I've got a bit of a tan this month from spending a lot of time outdoors (despite the ridiculous 90+ degree temps!), I've been using this foundation a lot.  I picked it up in a color I knew was a little too dark at the time, but now it's perfect.  But that's not the only reason I've been using it.  It really does last all day long, and it's proven to be pretty humidity resistant as well.  I just use a tissue to blot my face when I feel sweaty (I don't get oily much with my dry skin), and it doesn't rub off that way.  I do notice a bit of transfer on my cell phone screen, but I think that every brand of foundation does that to some extend.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Brow Mousse:  {Read my review here}  This has totally replaced my Elizabeth Arden brow powder that I've been using for the past six years.  Every once and a while I'll grab a pencil to fill in my brows, but pretty much this is my go-to product for getting perfect brows that last all day long.  I think my favorite part is that it comes with a dual ended brush to apply the product and brush out the brow hairs.  And this stuff is majorly pigmented.  Just a tiny bit will fill in the whole brow, and after an entire month of using it nearly every day I've made just the barest of dents in it.

NYX Lip Butter in Eclair:  {Read my review here}  I introduced my teenage nieces to this lip gloss, and they are all about now, too.  I recently stocked up again at Ulta when they had a sale (and broke my challenge, I know! Ugh!), and I added a few more colors to my collection. I need to just start buying them online instead of in the store, because the colors I want are always out of stock in my local store.  They seriously had 1-2 of only a few colors, and I had to be nice and let my niece get the only one in a color I've been wanting.  What a nice Auntie I am! ha ha!  Meringue is a pretty decent substitute for Eclair if you can't get your hands on it by the way.  Eclair still remains my favorite though, and I use it daily.  It is the perfect pale pink and positively LIVES in my purse. (Peter Piper picked a peck.... haha)  Moving on...

Be A Bombshell Blush:  {See my review on IPSY here}  If you've read my blog about Tarte's Amazonian Clay Blush {here}, you'll know how much I absolutely adore their product.  But I think I may have found a new brand of blush to obsess over for a while.  I got the Be A Bombshell blush in Sweet Cheeks, and I've used it almost every day.  I alternate it with my Frisky Tarte blush, and this color gives me a great flush without being too bright.  It's a subtle warm pink that goes great with my fair skintone, although it does look better on me now with a bit of a tan.  It's nice and pigmented and can be brushed on sheer with a brush like the Real Techniques Stippling Brush, or layered for more color with an angled blush brush.

Covergirl Flamed Out Mascara: I haven't published my review for this mascara yet, but I've definitely been recommending it via my Facebook and Instagram if you've been paying attention.  (If not, why not?  Check them out and follow me now to stay up to date with my top recommendations BEFORE they hit the blog!)  This has a unique hourglass shaped wand that deposits mascara perfectly, and the formula is rich and creamy without clumping. It delivers perfect volume and the perfect price point.  Every time this month I've done my makeup, this is the mascara that I've reached for, and it's not even waterproof!  It hasn't smudged or melted off, either.  Not sure if they make a waterproof version, but I'll definitely be hunting it down at the store before I head to Florida in a few weeks to double check.

My Thoughts: These are a really great option for someone who can't get their hands on the ones by MAC (or don't want to spend the extra $6).  They glide on really beautifully, and they do last a good long time.  I don't think that any makeup can truly last a full 24 hours on the face, but it does give a solid 12-14 hours even in the humidity, and longer on days where the air is drier or your skin/eyes aren't on the oilier side.  The brush that comes with these is fairly decent.  You can rotate it to achieve varying thicknesses, on its edge for a very crisp line or flat for a thicker line.

  

I have two colors, the brown and the black.  They don't look patent leather shiney, but they also don't dry to a matte black.  More like in between.  I would definitely purchase more of the colors, and I use these on my studio clients for shoots all the time.

Final Verdict: Like I said, these are a great option for those who can't get their hands on the MAC gel liners.  They are very long wearing, come in a variety of shades, come with a handy brush that's actually useable, and have a nice finish.  I recommend looking for a sale somewhere like Ulta that frequently does BOGO half off on L'Oreal products for an even better deal!

My Thoughts:  This is definitely one of the best drugstore mascaras I've ever owned.  Hands down.  It gives my lashes a full, lush look with just one coat, or I can use two coats for even more drama.  I haven't tried to wear it for 24 hours (that's just crazy!), but it does last from morning to midnight very well with no flaking or smudging.  I use the color Blackest Black, and I haven't tried the other colors. 

 

I really like the wand on this mascara. I'm very particular about how they should be shaped and how big they should be to reach my lashes without overwhelming my eyes.  This one fills both need (let's be honest here and call them eccentricities) perfectly.  The bristles are dense enough to one another to grip my thin lashes on both sides and coat them evenly, without clumping them together.  The formula of the mascara is also nice and thick, so it only takes one coat to see noticeable volume.  It dries quickly but not stiff, and it doesn't flake or smudge.  So far I haven't found it in a waterproof formula, but it's humidity resistant at least.

 

 

Final Verdict:  LOVE IT!  Totally recommend this mascara to anyone looking for lots of plush volume at a great price!

Product Review- L'Oreal Infallible Foundation

My Thoughts:  I'm pretty much in love with this foundation.  I never in a million years would have thought I'd say that about a drugstore brand of foundation, but this is truly an awesome product.  I started using this a few weeks ago, and it's almost replaced my prestige brands when I'm looking for a more full coverage foundation.  The wear-time on it is fantastic!  I apply it with a damp blender sponge, and it sets within about 60 seconds.  I top it with a light dusting of powder to set it, since it tends to dry to a somewhat "tacky" finish on my skin.  But it's very lightweight, and I can't feel the foundation on my skin.  It is more full coverage, but it doesn't look really heavy or thick on the surface.  You can tell you're wearing foundation, but it doesn't look caked on.  I can wear this all day, and it will still look fresh no matter how late I'm going to bed.  The tacky feeling on the skin might be little off-putting for some, but it does go away fairly quickly.

 

If you rub at it, it will leave a "blank" spot on the skin though.  I wore it all day the other day, and in the bathroom at the restaurant that night I itched my nose and suddenly I had a very visible naked spot.  I had to try to rub the surrounding area to blend it all away, but my nose did look a little red for a few minutes after.  This was after wearing it for at least 8 hours, and the rest of it still looked flawless.  It seems to stand up to heat, humidity, oil, and sweat fine, but friction can wear it off unevenly.

Final Verdict: The best drugstore foundation I've ever tried, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a long-wearing affordable option!

Product Review- L'Oreal True Match Super Blendable Concealer

My Thoughts: This is a pretty good concealer for a drugstore quality brand.  I like that if I know my color in the L'Oreal True Match family, I can pick out the coordinating products easily.  The name Super Blendable Concealer is also a good description for this concealer.  It does blend very easily into the skin, with a nice light coverage that is very natural looking.  It can be built up for more coverage if you like, so it's good for people looking for buildable coverage.  The consistency is very creamy, but I didn't notice any particular hydration coming from it.  I'd still recommend using an undereye cream before, but be sure to blot away any excess before applying the concealer so that the cream doesn't start to break down the longevity of the concealer.  It's not the longest wearing product on the market, but there's only so much you can expect in a concealer that's under $10.  But it's a L'Oreal product, so that means it gets my vote!  I think that for a drugstore brand they've got their shiz together.  They turn out great products at an affordable price.  Plus, it's available pretty much everywhere makeup is sold, except department stores.

Final Verdict: Good for the price, but there are higher end products out there that will last longer.

Massive Makeup Haul- Target, Ulta, Sephora, and MAC

This past weekend I went on a massive makeup shopping spree to Ulta, Sephora, MAC, and Target, and I got a ton of products to review for upcoming articles here on the blog.  I want to put together some awesome Top 10 lists on categories like foundations, mascaras, lip products and more, so I knew I needed to have a comprehensive knowledge of the many options out there available.

I'm not going to go into reviews of all of the products that I purchased, as this would be the never-ending blog post if I were to do that.  As it stands, I had to film four different haul videos to get everything up on my YouTube channel!  I'm uploading the first one as I type this, and of course it's super late in the evening because we lost internet for about 3 hours earlier right when I was getting ready to post today's blog.  I probably should have typed this up this morning before starting filming, but I was enjoying my day to sleep in while hubby-wonderful took the boys to school.  (He's seriously just the BEST.)

As you can see by recurring brand names, L'Oreal, Maybelline, Revlon, and Covergirl had buy one get one half off on a lot of their items, or else that'd be way more money I'd have spent.  Thankfully, I plan when I shop to take advantage of their awesome sales and use my accumulated points for dollars off my total!

Phew!  That was a lot to type up!  Now I'm off to bed before doing a wedding in the afternoon.  Hopefully I've learned my lesson and will type up tomorrow's blog when I get up instead of trying to hope the internet doesn't fail in the evening when I get back from DC.
